Mercury is retrograde again. It happens three times a year, and we're about a week into this one.

But I want to look at something specific today. This retrograde is happening in Cancer.

If you're a millennial like a lot of you listening, you share something else with me too – a Pluto in Scorpio placement that shapes how you relate to emotion. That combination is what makes this Mercury retrograde hit differently.

What Mercury Retrograde Is Really For

Every retrograde is a chance to go back and revisit. It's an invitation to look inside and put more attention on your inner world – the thoughts, the beliefs, the reactions, the stories you tell yourself.

When Mercury goes retrograde, you get to look into your own mind. You can see the wiring behind your experiences and make some shifts.
Then when it goes direct, you experience life differently. Your communication changes. Your relationships change. Even your relationship with tech changes.

That's why it's smart to back up your devices, give yourself extra time to get places, and hold off on signing big contracts. So much of your attention is meant to turn inward right now, which means things can get a little weird out in the world while you're focused inside.

Mercury's Trickster Energy

Mercury is the trickster of the zodiac, and it loves to stir up chaos in the tech and online world.

I've noticed it myself this time around. I keep three Chrome windows open, usually with one minimized. Lately, that minimized window keeps popping back up out of nowhere, and I have to push it back down again. Classic Mercury retrograde move.

Scorpio and Cancer: Two Different Relationships to Emotion

Here's where it gets interesting for me. I don't have anything in Cancer in my natal chart, but I do carry a strong Scorpio signature, and Pluto in Scorpio is basically extra Scorpio energy.

When an emotion comes up for me, my instinct is to lean into it, get curious, and move through it. That process takes me somewhere. It's like a trip into the underworld – cathartic and transformational. I come out the other side having learned something about myself.

In a way, every emotion feels like a call to adventure.

Cancer works differently. From what I've noticed, Cancers experience emotion more as a state – like water they float on, a lazy river they drift down. It's a place they go, something they embody. That's beautiful in its own way.

If you share my Scorpio wiring, that Cancer approach can feel like it's missing the payoff. It skips the deep dive, the heroine's journey into the root of the feeling. That's just a different kind of depth, and it doesn't make it any less real.

The Real Challenge for Scorpio-Wired People

Because Scorpio energy is so used to diving all the way in, it can be hard to know where to draw the line. You've done the reps. Diving deep is just what you do.

Cancer, on the other hand, tends to be good at sensing boundaries. Cancer knows where the waves of protection are, and how deeply someone can meet you, or how deeply you actually want to meet them.

This Mercury retrograde in Cancer is highlighting that exact skill for a lot of us millennials. Whether it's showing up through the Cancer people in your life or just the energy itself moving through your thoughts, the lesson is the same. Learn to navigate emotional waters well, in every kind of relationship and situation.

The real art here is learning to show up fully real and authentic, no matter where you draw that line. That's different from the usual Scorpio tendency to either bare everything or hold back everything.
